Mission: Honduras
In November 2005 a vision was born to create a mission organization that would exist to spread the message of salvation in Jesus Christ by providing an avenue for people to serve the Lord in both North America and abroad. With that goal in mind, North Texas Missions, Inc. was formed by Bob Johnson, Bill Hayden, Steven Moss and Farren Mervicker, as a non-profit organization. Initially, the focus of the organization was to provide leadership, guidance, training and support of short-term mission trips in Central America, however, the team believed that God had a greater purpose planned for the future.
In August 2006 that “greater purpose” began to take shape in the form of a ministry to the orphaned children of Honduras. On March 16, 2007, after much prayer, Bill Hayden, Steven Moss, Julius Ruiz, Dr. Erin Mitchell, Dr. Jessica Aguilar and Bob Johnson embarked on a vision trip that would take them throughout the country of Honduras visiting different children’s homes as they sought God’s will for the vision. During this trip God provided very clear directions as to next steps. Whereas the team’s original plans included exclusive focus on the orphanage, other ministry opportunities presented themselves. Included in these were the creation of week-long mission trips from the U.S., the building of a school, creation of medical and dental facilities and helping improve agricultural services to the nation.
In all this the Lord has given the group a vision for purchasing approximately 200 acres of land at the base of the Montana El Tiboron and Montana La Madera mountain ranges in the Sula Valley. This area has rich soil for farming and agriculture and lies in some of the most beautiful tropical land in the world. The team has trusted God to provide land that is located approximately an hour from San Pedro Sula between the towns of El Progresso and Tela. This location will provide easy access to the airport and to major commerce.
Currently plans include the construction of multiple casitas, staffed by godly Honduran adults, where the children will live in a family environment with 12 – 20 children per home. In order to offset the high cost of food, those living on the land will be able to raise crops and livestock. The responsibilities for managing this agricultural enterprise will be shared with the children, so they will be prepared to integrate back into Honduran society as they mature. Full-time U.S. missionaries who will be the “parents” of the home will oversee the orphanage. Among their commitments will be to offer daily love, spiritual guidance and oversight that is needed to run the organization.
In addition to these activities, the mission’s purpose will be to expand the use of the facility for God’s kingdom, and conduct week-long mission trips to provide construction support to the children’s home and minister to the needs of the surrounding communities, many of which do not have direct access to support services.
Pray with us that this ministry effort will show that Christ’s love extends well past the walls of the orphanage and into the community. I can think of no greater purpose on earth than to share God’s love through action.
As with most Central American countries, things take time, so our immediate next steps are to begin the process of incorporating as a Honduran entity and investigate land opportunities. On April 15, 2007 our team traveled to Honduras to begin the search for land in the El Progresso area. While there we identified a property that has approximately 155 acres with two natural springs and two rivers flanking either side. We have signed an Intent to Purchase and are currently working out the details to finalize the purchase, however, your prayers are still needed. As with any large purchase there are obstacles that have to be overcome and this is no exception. Once the land has been purchased, a more definite time line of events and activities can be determined and communicated.
The team covets your prayers and support and in obedience to Christ’s command in Matthew 5:16 to “let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” let us Go and Light our World.
Reaching out to the World!
Bob Johnson
